EFT vs. Gottman: Two Approaches to Couples Therapy
Choosing a couples therapist can mean sorting through unfamiliar names before you have even spoken to anyone. I work mainly with Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT. Here is how its focus compares with the Gottman Method.

What does EFT focus on?
EFT looks at what happens when reaching for your partner feels risky. An argument may contain a wish for reassurance, a fear of rejection, or an effort to avoid another painful exchange.
I pay attention to the sequence between you: how one response shapes the next. We slow that sequence down so each person can describe more than the position they defend during a fight.
What is the Gottman Method?
The Gottman Method uses assessment and structured interventions to address friendship, managing conflict, and building shared meaning. Work may include understanding each other's lives, responding to bids for connection, and discussing recurring disagreements.
It is not simply a set of communication tips. Emotional connection matters in Gottman work too, just as EFT can include practical conversations about how to respond differently.
Why do I mainly work with EFT?
I often hear couples say they know what they should say, but cannot access those words when hurt. EFT gives me a way to understand that gap without treating either partner as the problem.
I am interested in the fear or longing underneath criticism and distance. My role is to help both of you describe those experiences without turning the session into a contest over who is right.
How do I choose an approach?
Ask a therapist what they pay attention to during an argument and how they help partners who respond differently. You can also ask about their training and how they decide what to focus on.
Neither approach is the right answer for everyone. Your willingness to talk with the therapist, your concerns, and whether the work feels understandable deserve attention alongside the model.
What would EFT sessions with me look like?
Couples appointments last 60 minutes. We might revisit a recent disagreement, notice where each of you felt hurt, and try putting a less familiar feeling into words. I keep the pace slow enough to follow.
I meet in person in Manhattan Beach or online with clients in California, Arizona, and Missouri. A free consultation lets you ask about my approach. My Rates page explains private pay and superbills; reimbursement depends on your plan.
