Premarital Counseling

Before the vows

A few months of honest conversation now can give you shared words for the harder moments later.

Who it is for

Couples getting ready to commit

You might be engaged, planning to move in, or simply serious about each other. Things may be going well. Premarital work is less about trouble and more about getting to know how the two of you operate under pressure.

How Naomi works

Curious, practical, a little playful

Naomi draws on Emotionally Focused Therapy to help you see the dance you do when stress shows up. She asks the questions couples tend to skip, and she keeps the tone light enough that it doesn't feel like an exam.

Expect some laughter, a few surprises about each other, and the occasional moment where one of you says, "I never knew that about you."

Naomi also pays attention to culture. If you grew up in different countries, languages, or family styles, she helps you put those differences on the table with curiosity instead of keeping score.

What we work on

Six conversations worth having

  1. 01

    Conflict

What each of you does when you're upset, and what you need afterward.

  2. 02

    Money

Saving, spending, debt, and the money stories you grew up with.

  3. 03

    Family of origin

Holidays, in-laws, and the unspoken expectations from both sides.

  4. 04

    Intimacy

How you each like to feel close, and how to ask for it.

  5. 05

    Children

Whether, when, and how. And how each of you imagines parenting.

  6. 06

    Roles at home

Who does what, and how you'll revisit it when life changes.

What can shift

A shared language you can reach for

Couples often leave with a clearer sense of each other's soft spots and a few phrases of their own for when things heat up. It won't prevent every hard day, and that isn't the aim. The aim is knowing how to find each other again.

What sessions look like

The couples format

Sixty minutes on secure video or in person in Manhattan Beach, usually weekly. Some couples come for a season before the wedding, while others continue into their first year of marriage.

Questions

About premarital counseling

We aren't fighting. Is this still useful?
Yes. Many couples come while things feel good, which makes the conversations easier.
How many sessions do couples usually do?
It varies. We'll talk about what you want to cover and plan from there.
