Therapy for German-Speaking Expats

A move can make sense on paper and still feel lonely once the boxes are unpacked. I work with German-speaking expats whose lives in the US include homesickness, career uncertainty, or the strain of moving for a partner.

What It Feels Like

What Life Abroad Can Feel Like

You may handle meetings in English all day, then struggle to explain a feeling that comes easily in German. Familiar humor, small routines, and effortless conversation can be missed.

Willkommen. Bei mir können Sie auf Deutsch oder Englisch sprechen. Auch Heimweh, Zweifel und widersprüchliche Gefühle dürfen zur Sprache kommen. Sie müssen Ihre Gedanken nicht erst perfekt formulieren.

Underneath

What the Move Has Cost

If you relocated for a partner, you might miss your own professional identity or financial independence. Loving the relationship does not cancel frustration about what the move has cost you.

Career moves can bring unexpected losses too. Status, friendships, and everyday competence may feel different here. I ask about your particular background rather than grouping German, Austrian, and Swiss experiences together. A shared language does not make everyone's relocation alike.

Our Work

Looking at Identity and Relationships

  1. Germany was home until I moved to the US at 16. I know that changing countries can affect ordinary interactions, but I do not assume my experience tells me what yours means.

  2. I use narrative and psychodynamic approaches to explore identity, relationships, and expectations. When useful, IFS helps us hear conflicting wishes, such as wanting to stay while also longing to leave. We can hold both without rushing a decision.

In Session

Speaking in Your Own Words

We can speak English or German and discuss switching languages when a topic feels different in each. I am interested in what helps you express yourself, not how polished you sound.

We might talk through a difficult call home, a stalled job search, or resentment after another evening alone. I make room for practical concerns alongside sadness, anger, and uncertainty. Couples work can include the different costs a move carried for each partner.

First Steps

A First Conversation in Either Language

I offer a free consultation to discuss what brings you here and your language preferences. You can ask about my approach without needing to explain your entire relocation history.

Individual sessions last 45 minutes; couples sessions are 60 minutes. I see clients online in California, Arizona, and Missouri and in person in Manhattan Beach. My practice is private pay; the Rates page has fee information.

Questions

Before We Begin

Must I speak German throughout?
No. I offer English and German sessions. We can discuss your preference and leave room for it to change.
Can we discuss moving back?
Yes. I can help you examine what staying or returning means without deciding which country should feel like home.
Do you provide insurance paperwork?
I can provide superbills for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Ask your insurer about your coverage; payment from your plan is not guaranteed.
