How Online Couples Therapy Works
Online couples therapy makes room for a relationship conversation without a trip to an office. I meet you through secure video and help you pay attention to what happens between you, not just the words coming through the screen.
At Home
Making room at home
You might join from the same room or from separate locations. Either way, both partners must be physically in California, Arizona, or Missouri during the appointment. A shared home address does not replace that requirement when one person is traveling.
Before we meet, consider where each of you can speak without being overheard or interrupted. Set aside other tasks and put notifications away. Prop up your device so both faces are visible without holding it. If a connection drops, we pause and reconnect rather than talk over missing words. Before the appointment, we discuss how to contact each other if video does not return.
Underneath
The screen is not the whole experience
It can feel unfamiliar to talk about your relationship while looking at a device. You may wonder whether I will notice a pause, a tense expression, or the moment one of you starts to pull away.
I ask about what I notice and what I cannot see. You can tell me when something feels missed. We can pause to check what each person heard rather than letting an assumption carry the conversation forward.
Emotionally Focused Therapy
How I use EFT online
My approach is Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT. We look for the repeating exchange that leaves you disconnected, such as one person pressing to talk while the other becomes quiet or defensive.
I help slow those moments down so you can recognize the hurt, worry, or longing behind your response. Then we practice expressing it to your partner in more direct words. The focus remains your connection, not performing well on video.
In Session
What an appointment involves
Each online couples appointment lasts 60 minutes. We can start with a recent interaction and look closely at how it unfolded. You do not need to prepare a presentation or resolve the argument before the call.
I offer sessions in English and German only. If meeting online is not your preference, in-person appointments are also available in Manhattan Beach. We can discuss the format when you contact me.
When to Reach Out
Questions before the first call
A free consultation is an opportunity to ask about online work and tell me what you are seeking. Questions about joining separately or making room for sessions are welcome alongside questions about the relationship itself.
Therapy is private pay, and I can provide superbills. Please review the Rates page and give 48 hours of notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.
